The severity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can be dramatically reduced with Chinese herbs and acupuncture. Hormonal cycle imbalances that can lead to PMS can be regulated with Chinese medicine. Moreover, PMS symptoms exacerbated by stress can be addressed by this type of medicine by promoting relaxation in the body. Also known as PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), PMS usually occurs a week prior to a woman’s actual menstrual flow leading to a number of symptoms. These symptoms include: sleeping difficulties, pelvic pain, cramping, breast swelling and tenderness, weight fluctuations, irritability, food cravings, digestive problems, crying spells, moodiness, headaches, acne, and bloating. PMS symptoms can be mild to extremely intense that they can significantly disrupt a woman’s life.

From the viewpoint of Chinese medicine PMS or PMDD, is the result of a stagnation or blocked qi or life energy in the body of a woman. This slow down of blood and energy flow results in irregular hormonal fluctuations and a build- up of symptoms that is finally released when menstruation commences. If, for example, a woman suffering from menstrual cramps along with digestive problems and headaches prior to her period may indicate that she has Liver Qi stagnation which affects the circulation of energy through her muscles and organs. Tension and stress can contribute to the "trapping" of qi, preventing it to move which then results in body pain.

Acupuncturists work with each of their patients to smooth out and re-balance the flow of blood and qi so that patients can experience a menstrual cycle with no or very little emotional stress, discomfort, and pain. Since Chinese medicine uses a holistic approach in treating a particular condition like PMS, it is important that a thorough understanding of all of the body’s systems be taken into consideration during the first appointment. The acupuncturist should be able to address his/her patient’s specific issues in an effective, unique and customized manner. Chinese herbal formulas are also given to enhance the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments. The formulas can be taken in raw forms, mixed with water and drunk, or taken via pills or tablets.
Traditional needling acupuncture is a very effective treatment. It can lead to pain relief even with just a single treatment, but with regular treatment, the frequency and intensity of the symptoms can be significantly alleviated and even completely cured. However, most patients get much better after a treatment lasting four to six weeks one session a week.
