The National Science and Technology Award Conference was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Jan 9. Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and other State officials attended the meeting and presented awards to winners. Li delivered an important speech at the conference on behalf of the Party Central Committee and the State Council. He stressed the in-depth integration of scientific and technical innovation and social and economic development to turn innovation achievements into productive elements. Li called upon relevant parties to optimize the technical innovation market-oriented mechanism by deepening reform.
A total of 34 medicine and health projects won national science and technology awards in 2014, including two first-place national science and technology progress prizes, 24 second-place prizes, one innovation team award, four second-place national natural science awards and three second-place national technological invention awards. A total of 11 achievements from major national science and technology projects led by the NHFPC won national science and technology awards in 2014. China’s first effective prevention, control and integrated innovation project against H1N1 flu outbreak won the first scientific and technological progress award. The project was supported by a special program for serious infectious diseases prevention and treatment and was led by Hou Yunde, an academician from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention. It adopted a national collaborative innovation model and has made top research achievements worldwide in diagnostic reagents, early warning and forecast, intensive treatment and vaccine development. The project has made outstanding contributions to epidemic control in China and the rest of the world.
The Chinese patented medicine secondary development core technology system, research and industrialization also won the first national scientific and technological progress prize. It was supported by the special science and technology program for major drug discovery and led by Zhang Boli, an academician from Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The project focused on clinical and Chinese patent medicine development needs, construction of the Chinese patent medicine secondary development core technology system, and application of the system in nearly 100 domestic enterprises. It aimed to cultivate major TCM varieties; boost technical upgrading of TCM companies; offer safe, effective, quality and cheap medicine for major disease prevention and control; and significantly raise economic and social benefits.
The NHFPC will continue to carry out the innovation-driven development strategy proposed at the 18th CPC National Congress. It will fully take care of science and technology innovation, research findings commercialization, and science and technology incentive management in the health and family planning field. It will also further tap into the creativity of medical researchers. The commission will focus on overall national development and major strategic requirements, carry forward the spirit of overcoming difficulties, and push forward China’s long-term health and family planning development.
