Hypoproteinemia is a decreased level of protein(s) in the blood. It occurs when protein is not properly absorbed during digestion (protein-losing gastroenteropathy). This can be caused by several gastrointestinal conditions, including impaired pancreatic function, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, gastrointestinal infection, parasite infestations, diarrhea, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis. Hypoproteinemia has been associated with suppurative lymphadenitis.
