A hallucination is a perception in the absence of external stimulus that has qualities of real perception. Hallucinations are vivid, substantial, and located in external objective space. They are distinguished from the related phenomena of dreaming, which does not involve wakefulness; illusion, which involves distorted or misinterpreted real perception.
Acupuncture is commonly used to treat stress, anxiety and depression. It has been shown to influence various neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, including Depressive Syndrome. Indeed, the most common "side-effect" of acupuncture treatment reported by patients is a feeling of calm and an improved sense of well-being. Patients often describe themselves as feeling relaxed, even mildly disoriented, and often "more whole" or "connected." TCM studies have shown that various centers in the brain, including the limbic system (the "emotional brain"), are activated by acupuncture.
