Overview
Narcotics abuse and addiction is always medical problem and social problem in mankind. The hazard of opioid drug which is made into narcotics is the most outstanding. Diamorphine, morphine, marijuana, cocaine, have high addiction. The abstinent symptom is serious. And relapse rate is high. Since last century 60's, opioid narcotics (especial diamorphine) have spread all over world forming global large prevalence. Estimated with epidemiology, there are 250 million narcotics abuse population in China. People who addict diamorphine are metaphrenia. The death caused by overdose narcotics-taking, is over a half part of narcotics abuse death rate. Narcotics abuse often leads to circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system, nerve system concurrent disease, such as endocarditis, infection, hepatitis, gastric and duodenal ulcer, constipation, convulsion, paralysis agitans, peripheral neuritis etc. And narcotics abuse has a close relation to the occurring of AIDS. Female narcotics abuse patient will affect the health of offspring.

Taking opioid drug in long term, make nerve cells have a series of adaptability changes. When the drug in corpora is removed or reduced suddenly, which damages the compensating balances of nerve cells, withdrawal syndromes appear. Withdrawal syndrome occurs after withdrawing drug 8-12 hours, some are mild, some are severe. Catarrh symptoms, similar to common cold, such as chasma, lacrimation, discharging nasal mucus, perspiration, come firstly. Then various kinds withdrawal symptoms appear one after another, including mydriasis, sneezing, goose flesh, shiver, loss of appetite, nausea and vomit, abdominal angina, diarrhea, bones and muscles twitch, flabbiness and powerless, insomnia and festless sleep, speeding-up heart rate. Blood pressure rising, bad emotion and irritability, dysphoria, depressing, even attacking action. All above syndromes is accompanied with strong mental hunger. These symptoms usually go on the peak in 36-72 hours. And most of them disappear in 7-10 days. Diagnosis is mainly based on case history and withdrawal syndromes. Therapeutic principle is opening the orifices and musing brain, promoting qi circulation to relieve pain, adjusting intestine and regulating qi supporting healthy energy to eliminate evils.

Treatment
1. Baihui (DU20)
Routine acupuncture therapy: after inserting the needle and obtaining the needling sensation, retain the needle for 60 minutes, and manipulate the needle intermittently to keep strong acupuncture feeling, or connect the needle with electric acupuncture apparatus. Treatment is done 1-2 times every day and 7 times make up a course.

2. Neiguan (PC6)
Routine acupuncture therapy: acupuncture with producing needling sensation transmitting to the elbow. Retain the needle for 60 minutes. Treatment is done once every day and 7 times make up a course of therapy.

3. Ear Point Lung
Insert into the ear point with 1.5 cun filiforrn needle, rotate the needle quickly till auricle has sense of warmth and distension. Retain the needle for 30-60 minutes, and connect the needle with electric acupuncture apparatus with continuous wave at 300-1000 Hz. Or intermittently manipulate the needle with hand. Treatment is done once every day.

Note
The treatment of narcotics addiction needs a very long course, and is till explored continuously. Refraining from narcotics with acupuncture can be used in different period. Combinated with west medicine in withdrawal period, can improve effect, relieve patient painful and reduce toxic side effect. It also can be used to relieve various kinds of emotional and somal discomfort after withdrawal period when nerve biochemistry is still not entire recover. Existing clinic has displayed that acupuncture has benign entirety regulating effect to body and can relieve digestive symptoms, improve sleep, regulating nerve system function.
