Acupuncture Extra Point Taiyang (EX-HN5)
Location:
Upright sitting or supine position; in the depression 1 thumb measurement cun ( the width of the interphalangeal joint of the patient's thumb is taken as one cun ) posterior and laterior to the midpoint of the line connecting the lateral end of eyebrow and paropia.
Function:
Eliminating wind and heat, and dreadging the collaterals for relieving pain.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-orbicular muscle of the eye-temporal fascia-temporal muscle.
There are the zygomaticofacial branch of the zygomatic nerve, the temporal and zygomatic trbutaries of the facial nerve, the temporal nerve of the mandibular nerve and the branches pr tributaries of the superficial temporal aretry and vein in this area.
Indications:
Headache, eye diseases, and deviation of the eyes and mouth.
Prescription:
Combined use with ShuigouGV26 (Acupuncture Single Point Shuigou (GV26)), ChengjiangCV24 (Acupuncture Single Point Chengjiang (CV24)) for treatment of facial paralysis; with YintangEXHN3 (EX-HN3), HeguLI4 (Hegu (LI 4) Yuan-Source Point) for treatment of headache due to common cold; and with YifengTE17 (Yifeng (TE 17)) for treatment of toothache.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly to 0.3-0.4 cun deep depth, or prick to cause bleeding; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
Note:
Under the point, the cranil bones including the frontal bone, the parietal bone and the sphenoid bone, etc, are fragil and in its deep part, there is the middle meningeal artery. Don't strike heavily.
