Acupuncture Point Hanyan (GB4)
Location:
Sit upright with one's back propped, or lie prostrate on one's side; firstly, locate TouweiST8( Touwei (ST8)) and QubinGB7(Qubin (GB7)), draw a curve connecting these two points which bends forward, midpoint of this curve is XuanluGB5(Xuanlu (GB5)), midpoint of TouweiST8(ST8) and XuanluGB5(GB5) is HanyanGB4 (Hanyan (GB4)). It moves somewhat during mastication.
Function:
Clearing heat, expelling wind, and relieving pain.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-superior anricualr muscle-temporal fascia-temporal muscle.
In the superficial layer, there are the auriculotemporal nerve and the parietal branches of the superficial temporal artery and vein. In the deep layer, there are the branches of the anterior and posterior deep temporal nerves.
Indications:
Migraine, Vertigo, Tinnitus, pain in the outer canthus, toothache, convulsion, and Epilepsy.
Prescription:
Combined use with FengchiGB20 (Fengchi (GB20)) for treatment of migraine; and with YintangEXHN3 (EX-HN3) for treatment of rhinitis.
Methods:
Insert the needle subcutaneously to 0.5-1 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention; moxibustion: using 3 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
