Overview
Heel pain is pain in heel region caused by acute or chronic injury. Usually it is caused by chronic inflammation, injury and hyperosteogeny of calcaneal tuberosity due to tumbling or long time standing or walking of feet with weak muscle tension which over-drags plantar fascia. Clinical manifestations are pain in the plantar side of the heel, becoming worse when walking with tenderness anteromedial to the heel. It is included in "foot pain" in TCM. The main principle of acupuncture therapy is unblocking meridians, removing blood stasis and alleviating pain.
Treatment
1. Gentong Point
It is an extra point which locates 1 cun posterior to LI4. A 28 2 cun needle is selected. gauge After routine sterilization, puncture perpendicularly about 1.5 cun. Until getting arrival of qi, the needle is retained for about 1 hour.
2. Ashi Point
① Ask the patient to lie in a prone position. The Ashi point on the affected foot is selected. Cut off a slight piece with thickness of 0.3- 0.5 cm from a fresh ginger. Prick some holes in the middle. Put the pagoda-shaped moxa cone made of moxa wool on the ginger to give moxibustion. Rub the local area with another piece of ginger after the moxa is burnt out and the heel feels burnt. The treatment is applied 1-2 times each day.
② Prednisolone acetate 15 mg mixed with 1% procaine solution 5 ml is injected into the Ashi point once every week.
Note
Ask the patient in acute stage to take enough rest. When the symptoms are alleviated, ask the patient to stand and walk less. Shoes with soft bottom are advisable. Or put a sponged cushion inside the shoe of affected foot.
