1) Avoid Fats and Oils
The western diet gets a whopping 47% of calories from fats (this includes oils) and this should be no more than 5%.  This does two things which make periods painful and bleeding more excessive.  Fats are known to increase estrogen output to excessive levels. Each month, a woman’s body naturally makes a little more estrogen to initiate the period.  When the estrogen is excessive, so is the cramping and bleeding. In addition, fat makes the blood thick and sludge-like which also increases the pain of the period because the blood cannot flow easily.

2) Hydrate
Keeping hydrated while on your period will help you to avoid cramps. The water will increase your blood flow so that you can get blood to all of your muscle hence you will avoid cramps to begin with. Drinking over one hundred ounces of water every day while on period will really help.

3) No Coffee
Coffee and other caffeinated drinks can be very bad for you while you are on your period because these drinks dehydrate you which can cause your blood circulation to slow down. Avoiding caffeinated drinks will help keep your blood circulating and avoid cramping.

4) Vitamins and Minerals
Taking vitamins and minerals everyday is a great way to help your body to avoid cramps while you are on your period. Many minerals are important to your body while you are menstruating. These minerals include magnesium, zinc, and calcium. Vitamin B is also very important to your body so that it can help support your blood circulation while menstruating.

5) Heat
One way to help with the pain of period cramps is to use heat. Heat is so soothing to a woman who has bad cramps during her period; I know this because I have endured this type of pain. A hot water bottle is an excellent way to help alleviate the pain and suffering of bad cramping. The heat will help with blood circulation and so that more blood can get to all the parts of your body and that in and of itself will stop the cramps. Heat the water up in a pot on the stove until it reaches the tempature of one hundred and five degrees and then poor the water into the bottle and seal it. Be careful while you are filling the hot water bottle because you do not want to scald yourself. I have my husband help me hold the bottle open while I fill it. Apply the bottle to your abdomen area for fifteen minutes while you are lying down. Do not use an electric heating pad as the alternating electric current creates an alternating magnetic field that is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to have a detrimental effect on living organisms.

6) Chamomile
A great way to increase your blood flow and relax your muscles is to drink some chamomile tea when you are on your period. Chamomile tea is so yummy and soothing. Making this home remedy is very simple; just add two teaspoons of dried chamomile leaves to one cup of boiling water. Allow the mixture continue boiling for another five minutes. After the five minutes are up remove the tea from the heating source and set it on a cool surface so that it can cool off and steep before you drink it. If you get cramps while on your period drink the tea every day as needed. Chamomile tea is also very helpful to drink before bed because it has a natural calming effect and is a natural sleep aid.
