Burns refer to the damage of body tissues due to excessive heat. This can be caused by sunlight, electricity, chemicals and even radiation, although the most common burns are occur from fire, hot water and steam. There are three kinds of burns, first degree, second degree and third degree. First degree burns are not to be worried about as they only affect the outer layer of skin. In time, the skin will heal and the mark should disappear in a few months time. Second degree burns affect to layers of skin, the outer layer and the one immediately below it while the innermost layer of skin is damaged in the case of third degree burns. Second and third degree burns would require immediate medical attention. Burn scars treatment begins right after the skin has been burnt. First aid for burns includes keeping the affected region under the tap and allowing running water to flow onto it. This will help cool the area.

An application of honey to the burnt skin will aid in the healing process. Take two tablespoons of plain, unflavored yoghurt and spread over the burn. Leave it on for about twenty minutes before washing it off with cool water. Mix a little lavender oil with aloe vera gel and spread it evenly over the burnt area to cool it down. You can repeat this application every fifteen minutes or so after the burn has occurred. Although smelly, egg whites too can be applied and then washed off. For burn scar removals, mash a slice of ripe papaya and place it on the burn. Cover it up with a clean piece of cotton cloth for a while. The enzymes in the fruit will help in the regeneration of new cells to replace the damaged ones. Burn scar treatment at home can include cutting a tomato in half and gently rubbing it onto the burn. Continue this treatment every ten minutes or so for an hour and then continue it at a slower pace over the course of the next few days. Mash a banana and apply it over the affected region. Wash it off in twenty minutes and repeat the treatment once a day.
