Rheumatic heart disease was formerly one of the most serious forms of heart disease of childhood and adolescence. Rheumatic heart disease involves damage to the entire heart and its membranes. Rheumatic heart disease is a complication of rheumatic fever and usually occurs after attacks of rheumatic fever. The incidence of rheumatic heart disease has been greatly reduced by widespread use of antibiotics effective against the streptococcal bacterium that causes rheumatic fever. Followings are the Symptoms and signs of Rheumatic Heart Disease in TCM.
(1) Syndrome of Deficiency of Qi and Blood (heart)
Main symptoms: Anxiety; asthenia, constipation, coronary disorders, dry stools, hard stools, hyperthyroidism, insomnia, irritability, neurasthenia, palpitations, weight loss, dry mouth; dry throat, emphysema, night sweating, spontaneous sweating, and pale or pink tongue
(2) Syndrome of Qi and Yin Deficiency (lungs)
Main symptoms: Fatigue, breathlessness, cardiac lung, chronic bronchitis, chronic cough, difficult to spit, pulmonary tuberculosis, spontaneous sweating, angina pectoris, coronary disorders, Dry mouth, dry tongue, weak pulse
(3) Syndrome of Imbalance of Yin and Yang (liver)
Main symptoms: Chronic fever, coronary disorders, hot palms and soles, neurasthenia, red complexion, tuberculosis, dry mouth, palpitations; Restlessness, Red and dry tongue
