The syndromes of this disease include excess and deficiency. Excess syndromes are caused by cold and dampness blocking the middle energizer, damp heat damaging the middle energizer and liver qi attacking the spleen; deficiency syndromes are due to deficiency of the spleen and stomach, declination of kidney yang and deficiency of both qi and yin.
Essentials for TCM Diagnosis
(1) Repeated attacks of abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyschesia with mucus and lassitude are the main symptoms of this disease. Diarrhea is predominant with blood, pus, mucus in the stools, accompanied with paroxysmal spastic colic pain. Different degrees of tenderness are present in the lower abdomen with hyperactive bowel sounds. Longterm diarrhea will cause emaciation and anemia.
(2) Small amount of leucocytes appears in microscopic examination of the stools.
(3) Congestion and edema of the colic mucosa plica and mucous secretion may be seen under fibercoloscope.
(4) Derangement of the intestinal plica mucosa is present in X-ray examination with barium enema.
