This syndrome is usually caused by emotional factors and dysfunction of the viscera, susceptibility to depression, liver depression and qi stagnation leading to transformation of fire and disturbing cardiac spirit; or by invasion of liver qi into the spleen and stomach, disharmony between the spleen and stomach, accumulation and retention of phlegm-dampness as well as obstruction of breast collaterals; or by constitutional yin asthenia, relative hyperactivity of liver qi, upward adverse flow of qi and disharmony of the lucid orifices; or by constitutional asthenia of the spleen and kidney, insufficiency of kidney yang,decline of fire in mingmen (gate of life), lack of warmth for the spleen, dysfunction of the spleen in transformation and transportation, retention of dampness, retention of fluid in the skin and migrating into the stomach and intestines. It is clear that this syndrome is mainly caused by dysfunction of the liver and is related to the heart, spleen and kidney.
