1) Carp (Cyprinus Carpio)
Get one black carp (1000--1500g in weight), cut it open, remove its internal organs, wrap it with mud and roast it in burning charcoal fire until white smoke comes out, then take it out and grind it into powder when it gets cool. It is to be taken with warm boiled water, 3 times a day, 2 spoonfuls each time. One carp makes up one dose. Table salt should be avoided. It is a very potent antihydropic agent, applicable to patients suffering from acute nephritis marked by the type of attack of wind-cold on the lung and stagnation of qi in the triple-jiao, or from chronic nephritis manifested as the type of overflow of water within the body due to insufficiency of both the spleen-yang and the kidney-yang.
2) Corn stigma (Stigma Maydis)
Decoct 50g of corn stigma in 600ml of water for 20 to 30 minutes, then boil it down to 300 to 400ml of decoction and remove the dregs. It is to be taken in two separate doses each day. It is applicable to patients suffering from obvious edema accompanied with hypertension; it is used to treat acute nephritis of the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of dampness and toxic material, or chronic nephritis marked by the type of hyperactivity of the liver-yang due to deficiency of both the liver-yin and the kidney-yin.
3) Black plum (Fructus Mume)
Make charcoal out of it, which is to be taken twice a day, 1.5g each time, until the end of seven or eight weeks. Its curative effect is all right for removing albumnuria. It can be used to treat chronic nephritis marked by the type of insufficiency of both the spleen and the kidney with deficiency of essence and blood.
4) Cogongrass rhizome (Rhizoma Imperatae)
This is the best diuretic drug. Decoct in water 60g of fresh cogongrass rhizome (30g if the dried is used) for frequent drinking. It is applicable to patients troubled with edema and hematuria, and used to treat acute nephritis manifested as the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of dampness and toxic material, and the type of toxic heat attacking the interior causing damage to yin-blood, or chronic nephritis of the type of overflow of water within the body due to insufficiency of the spleen-yang and kidney-yang.
5) Sesame seed (Semen Sesami Nigrum)
Grind it into powder after it is parched. It is to be taken following its infusion in boiling water after sugar has been added to it, and used to treat chronic nephritis manifested as cold of insufficiency type of the lower-jiao due to protracted illness.
6) Waxgourd (Fructus Benincasae)
Make three big bowls of soup with 500g of waxgourd and take the soup in three separate doses. It is applicable to acute nephritis of the type of retention of wind-heat in the lung and accumulation of dampness and toxic material and the type of toxic heat attacking the interior causing damage to the yin-blood.
7) Those who indicate the symptoms of obvious general edema and gradual reduction of the amount of urine should eat things good at inducing diuresis, such as radish (Napus) waxgourd (Fructus Benincasae), towel gourd (Fructus Luffae), red phaseolus bean (Semen Phaseoli), black soybean (Semen Sojae Nigrum), crucian carp (Carassius Auratus), bamboo shoots (Germen Phyllostachydis), water melon (Fructus Citrulli) and so on. Those in whose urine there are red blood cells proved by uroscopy should eat things that can arrest bleeding, such as shepherd's purse (Herba Gapsellae), eggplant (Fructus Solani), shelled peanut (Semen Arachidis), cogongrass rhizome (Rhizoma Imperatae), lotus root with knots (Rhizoma Nelumbinis Cum Nodo) and so on. Those who suffer from nephritis accompanied with hypertension should often eat food that can bring down blood pressure, such as jellyfish (Rhopilema), celery (Apium), spinach (Spinacia), tomato (Fructus Lycoperisici), Jew's-ear (Auricularia), fresh corn (Semen Maydis Recens), water chestnut (Bulbus Heleocharis Tuberosae) and the like.
