Some of the most well-known acupuncture points traditionally used for infertility are located on the lower back, sacrum, lower abdomen, and the back and inner part of the lower legs. Those regions are also considered very important from a neuroanatomical perspective. The regions are within the spinal nerve segmental innervations of the ovaries and uterus (T10-L2 and S2-S4 dermatomes). Series of laboratory studies on rats demonstrated that stimulating acupuncture points located within the T10-L2 and S2-S4 dermatomes significantly influenced ovarian and uterine blood flow via a physiological mechanism called somato-visceral reflex.

How many treatments will I need for Heavy or Light periods? A normal course of treatment will be 3 months. Depending on your specific pattern of symptoms, your acupuncturist will decide if you need to come once a week or less frequently. In some cases more than one course of treatment will be necessary to fully resolve the condition. What other tools am I given to make sure my treatments are effective? Diet modification is an important component to estrogen balance. Certain foods can increase the levels of estrogen such as soy. A diet without fiber can cause the body to hold on to extra estrogen instead of secreting it. A completely fat-free diet will render the body unable to produce estrogen at all. Your acupuncturist will take a close look at your diet and make suggestions accordingly.
