The source is from the root of Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn and P. decurisivum Maxim., family Umbelliferae. They are separately produced in the areas of Zhejiang, Hunan and Sichuan; or the areas of Jiangxi, Anhui, etc. They are dug and collected in winter and spring and dried in the sun after the stem and leaves are got rid of. The crude one is cut into pieces for being used or the one roasted with honey is used.
Medicinal Properties: Bitter and pungent in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the lung meridian.
Actions: Lower the adverse-rising qi and resolve phlegm, expel wind and heat.
Application
1. For undescending of lung-qi with cough, dyspnea and thick sputum, it is usually combined with Sangbaipi ( Cortex Mori Radicis ), Beimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae ) and Xingren ( Semen Pruni Armeniacae ), etc.; for cold-phlegm and dampness-phlegm syndrome, used in combination with Baiqian (Rhizoma Cynanchi Stauntonil).
2. For exogenous wind and heat, especially for stagnation of wind and heat in the lung with cough and sputum, it is usually combined with Bohe (Herba Menthae), Niubangzi ( Fructus Arctii ) and Jiegeng ( Radix Platycodi ) .
Usage and Dosage:
3 - 10 g is used in decoction for oral use.
