The source is from Dryobalanops aromatic Gaertn. f., family Dipterocarpceae, or crystals from evaporated trunk. When the medicinal material is made from leaf of Artemisia argyi levl.et Vant, family Compositae., it is called resin of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant. It is mostly synthesized from camphor and turpentine oil, called synthetic one. The finished product should be stored in cool place and in closed container. It is ground into powder in application.
Medicinal Properties:
Pungent and bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature, and attributive to the heart, spleen and lung meridians.
Actions:
Regain conciousness; clear away heat and alleviate pain.
Application
1. It is applied for wind stroke due to stagnation of phlegm and coma. With its cold nature, it is suitable for the sthenic syndrome of coma of heat type and mostly used together with Shexiang ( Moschus, artificial), such as Angong Niuhuang Wan (Pill), Zhibao Dan (Bolus), etc..
2. It is applied for intercostal neuralgia, sore throat, aphthae, reddish swollen and painful eyes, or ulcer. In the case of sore throat, it is used together with Pengsha (Borax), Zhusha ( Cinnabaris ) , and Xuanmingfen ( Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus), etc., such as Bing Peng San (Powder); in the case of reddish swollen and painful eyes, with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Luganshi (Calamina), such as in Boyun San (Powder)In addition, it is found in many prescriptions for the purpose of clearing away heat and promoting tissue regeneration.
Usage and Dosage:
0. 03 - 0.1 g is used in pill or powder and not in decoction. Proper amount is for external application.

It is used in pregnant women with caution.
