Massage offers much that is good; it is relaxing and soothing. It can help to relieve stiff joints and sore muscles. The therapists at the clinic I have attended are pleasant and thoroughly professional with a manner that immediately sets the tone for the hour that ensues, an hour of total self-indulgence that is a most satisfying experience.
There is, however-no pun intended-a rub. The students of massage therapy are taught, and many of them believe and so convince their clients, that there are certain ``medical`` benefits to be derived from this type of treatment. Such words as ``shiatsu,`` ``reflexology`` and ``acupressure`` creep into the picture, and this is where the line should be drawn.
None of these procedures or theories has any scientific or medical validity. Here practitioners cross over into mysticism, the occult and pseudo- science. More`s the pity, because such practices taint their work and its real value.
