Eczema on the ear can be particularly uncomfortable because of the extreme itchiness it can cause and the likelihood of an infection developing when the skin is damaged. The ear also becomes more prone to invasion by bacteria or fungus.

Eczema on the ear or in the ear can initially be caused by the skin being extra sensitive. Often the natural oil is stripped away through over cleaning or aggravated by getting water in the ear, wearing ear plugs, using cotton swabs or Q-tips or from the chemicals in shampoos, soaps and even hair spray. When badly affected, an itchy ear can progress to one that is sore and tender to the touch and even discharging fluid and becoming swollen.

Eczema on the ear is invariably very itchy and the temptation to scratch is there whatever the age of the sufferer. However, scratching should be avoided at all costs because it irritates the skin even more, prolonging the condition and increasing the risk of infection.

Checking with the doctor
Before attempting to treat severe eczema where the ears are painful and discharging, it is wise to have them checked and cleaned carefully by your doctor. Afterwards make every effort avoid scratching so that treatment can commence. If your condition is so severe it is interfering with your ability carry out normal day to day tasks, you may have an inner-ear problem that requires medical attention.

Treatment for the eczema itself involves eliminating any infection to manage the eczema outbreak before hydrating and moisturizing the ears to promote healing and ease that incessant itching.

Natural remedies are the safest way to go
Warm a few teaspoonfuls of warm raw honey and apply directly to the outer and visible part of the inner ear (do not go any deeper than you would with a cotton swab) with a clean, thin cloth. Let the solution dry and leave on for around 10 minutes, then rinse off and dry the ears completely with a clean towel. Honey is a natural anti-inflammatory which eases the itchiness and pain with antibacterial properties to eliminate any infection.

A natural zinc cream is another method to give a cooling sensation to the eczema affected area of the ear. Again, there are antibacterial properties in zinc. Use throughout the day to combat itchiness, keep the ear bacteria-free and moisturize too.

Essential oils are gentle to use on your your skin because they are non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing and an essential oils product such as H-Eczema (with its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties) is just what is needed for successful treatment of the symptoms of eczema of the ear and elsewhere and safe for children.
