Key Points for Diagnosis:
Eye problems are very common these days. Many people assume that a decline in eyesight is an unavoidable part of the aging process. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, those with liver dysfunctions are even more vulnerable to waning eye health than those with a fully functioning liver. The relationship between the eyes and the Liver system is based on the Five Element Theory where it is understood that the eyes are the opening of the Liver system. And if you think about how jaundice can be first recognizable on the eyes, and people who get extremely angry (anger is an emotion related to Liver and causing an upsurge of Liver energy) can get blood shot eyes. The following three TCM liver imbalances are behind a variety of eye-related problems:
Liver Blood Deficiency
Liver blood is believed to nourish and moisten the eyes. When the liver blood is deficient, common problems include blurry vision, myopia, "floaters" in the eyes, color blindness or dry eyes.
Liver Heat
When there is heat in the liver and liver channel, the eyes are likely to be dry, bloodshot, painful or have a burning sensation.
Internal Liver Wind
Usually a result of extreme heat in the liver, internal liver wind may cause the eyeball to turn upwards and move involuntarily.
In TCM, a disease or a symptom might be caused by one pathogenic factor, even two or three pathogenic factors. When diagnosing a disease or a symptom, TCM doctors must follow the principle of "Syndrome Dfferentiation", and then "Suit the Remedy to the Case". In order to gain a more definite and valuable diagnosis, it's important and necessary for the doctor to learn the detailed health information of the patient, including his/her disease duration, age, sex, height, weight, family history, urine, stool, diet, sleep, sweat, energy, mood (emotion), as well as the tongue conditions and the palm conditions, etc. If you would want our expert to create a TCM diagnosis, you're welcome to contact us.
