Erythema nodosum is a septal panniculitis, which is an inflammatory reaction of subcutaneous adipose tissue and is manifested by the appearance of painful nodules on the calves. It is the most frequent panniculitis, with most cases occurring between 20-30 years and women are affected 3-6 times more often than men. Erythema nodosum is not a disease but rather a skin reaction to various causative agents. Most commonly incriminated drugs and streptococcal infections, especially sulfonamides and oral contraceptives. Painful nodules has been associated with erythema nodosum.
