Headaches are an irritating problem that affects most individuals at least a few times in their life. Recently, the National Institute of Neurological disorders and strokes concluded that they were the most common source of pain amongst adults and children. While most headaches are usually simply irritating, on occasion they can become much more frequent and problematic. Although it may not be the only factor, Diabetes has been known to cause this health problem usually due to hypoglycemia.

As some of our readers may already know, this condition occurs when glucose levels drop too low in the body. Hypoglycemia often develops for dietary reasons, which is why those with diabetes are often advised to monitor their glucose before and after meals. Low blood sugar levels can cause a number of problems, but one of the most frequent side effects is headaches. Usually when a person’s glucose is stabilized these symptoms are alleviated, but nonetheless they can still have long lasting consequences on a person’s well being. This has been shown by recent research which suggests that hypoglycemic episodes can influence the brain structure and lead to the development of serious neurological problems.

If low blood sugars are the primary reason as to why you experience headaches, then the solution to preventing or alleviating them often involves addressing hypoglycemia. The best way to raise your glucose is to eat anywhere between 15-20 grams of sugars or simple carbohydrates. However, after doing this you must also check your blood-sugar levels 10-15 minutes afterward to ensure that they have returned to normal levels. Keep in mind also that exercise and medication can cause your glucose to drop either suddenly or steadily over a period of time, possibly triggering a hypoglycemic episode. If despite your best efforts you are still having trouble managing your sugars and suffer from frequent headaches, make sure to talk to a doctor or specialist before your condition worsens.
