The internal therapeutic methods for otic diseases include dispelling wind, clearing away heat, purging fire, removing toxin, promoting diuresis to remove dampness, strengthening the kidney yin, promoting blood circulation to expel pus, promoting qi flow and dredging orifices, etc. As for the concrete content, please refer to the specific discussions of the each chapter.

The external therapeutic methods for diseases of the ear are as follows:

Use the method to remove pus inside the external auditory canal. The heat-removing, toxin-eliminating and astringing traditional Chinese drugs may be decocted to wash the affected part, or 30 % Phellodendron Ear Drops and 3 % hydrogen dioxide solution may be used to clean the ear.

Use 30% Phellodendron Ear Drops, fresh saxfrage juice, etc. to be dripped into the external auditory canal for the treatment of diseases of the external auditory canal or tympanic membrane and middle ear.

Insufflate a bit of medicinal powder into the external auditory canal like Hongmian Powder which cures otitis media suppurativa in Jisheng Prescriptions. Do not insufflate too much powder. Also, each time before insufflaring the powder, clean the powder insufflated previously.This can prevent the retention of powder and its influence on pus drainage.

If the ear is red, swollen and painful, smear Qingfu Powder on the periotic region. In the case of inability to smear Qingfu Powder inside the external auditory canal,apply Goldthread Paste on the affected part.

The method, namely eustachian tube inflation, with the application of the given air pressure, makes air enter the auditory tube. This accordingly makes obstructed auditory tube unobstructed. The commonly-used methods include  self- inflation,   Potter''s  balloon  inflation,Ehrlich''s tube inflation, etc. Inflation can also be used to help removal of pus in the middle ear.
