Elucidation:
This syndrome is the result of pathogenic heat invading yingfen, scorching ying-yin and injuring blood vessels, for which the method of clearing away heat and toxin and nourishing yin should be adopted. Ingredient No. 1 is very good at clearing away heat from yingfen, functioning as monarch drug. Ingredients No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 act as minister drug, which not only help the monarch drug to purge away heat but also nourish yin and promote the production of body fluid. Ingredients No.8 and No. 9 are of mild action and, when combined with the above drugs to clear away heat from yingfen and eliminate toxins, can direct heat out of qifen.
When combined with ingredient No. 7, they can strengthen the action of the monarch drug. Ingredient No. 6 can cool blood and promote the flow of blood so as to prevent complication of heat with blood, and serves together with the above three ingredients as adjuvant drug. Ingredient No. 4 plays the part of guiding drug, which not only clears away heat in the heart but also directs the other drugs to the heart.
Cautions:
Since ingredients No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 in this recipe are sweet in flavor and cool and moist in nature, it is not applicable to patients manifesting deep-red tongue with whitish glossy fur, which is attributable to syndrome of retained heat due to blockage of dampness.
