Source:Neiwaishang Bianhuo Lun ( Treatise on Differentiation of Internal and External Injuries).
 
Ingredients:
No. 1 Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei)30 g;
No. 2 Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus)15 g;
No. 3 Shenqu (Massa Fermentata Medicinalis)15 g;
No. 4 Fuling (Poria)9 g
No. 5 Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae)9 g;
No. 6 Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis)9 g;
No. 7 Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae)9 g;
No. 8 Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis)6 g.
  
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into fine powder; soak and steam it to make pills; take orally 6 -9 g each time and twice or three times daily with warm boiled water. Or decoct the above drugs with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.
  
Actions:
Promoting digestion, removing stagnated food, eliminating heat and dampness.
 
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of food stagnancy with dampness-heat, marked by epigastric and abdominal fullness and pain, diarrhea or constipation, scanty dark urine, greasy yellowish and thick fur, deep rapid and forceful pulse. It is applicable to gastrointestinal dysfunction, chronic dysentery and others with chief manifestations as epigastric and abdominal fullness and pain, irregular defecation, and reddened tongue with greasy yellowish fur, which are ascribed to dampnessheat and food stagnancy retaining in the stomach and intestines.

In case of severe abdominal fullness and pain,diarrhea and tenesmus, add Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) and Binglang ( Semen Arecae) to promote the flow of qi and remove stagnancy. In case of dysentery with excessive heat, high fever, pus and blood in the stool, add Baitouweng ( Radix Pulsatillae ) and Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae) to clear away heat from the intestines and remove heat and toxins from the blood.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by dampnessheat and food retaining in the stomach and intestines,leading to food stagnancy, dysfunction of qi activity and disturbance of transportation. It should be treated by promoting digestion, removing stagnancy and eliminating heat and dampness. No. 3 with the function of promoting digestion and No. 2 with the function of promoting the circulation of qi and removing stagnancy play the role of monarch drugs together, ensuring an easy flow of qi of the middle-energizer. No. 1 is the minister drug, which can purge away heat, relax the bowels and lead the stagnated food and dampness-heat downward. No. 5 and No. 6 are capable of clearing away heat and eliminating dampness, No. 4 and No. 8 eliminating dampness by inducing diuresis, while No. 7 has the function of reinforcing the spleen so as to remove stagnancy without impairing the vital-qi, all these five serving as adjuvant drugs.

Cautions:
This recipe is drastic in its purgative effect, thus it should be used with great caution for patients with dysentery but not severe stagnancy or thosewith weakness of the spleen due to protracted dysentery. It is also contraindicated for pregnant women.
