Actions:
Tranquilizing mind, suppressing yang and improving eyesight.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is applicable to restlessness due to disharmony between the heart and kidney, marked by palpitation, insomnia, tinnitus, deafness, and blurred vision. It is also applicable to neurosis, epilepsy, hypertension, and pathologic changes of retina, optic nerve, vitreous body and lens as well as disturbance of aqueous humor circulation. If concomitant with dizziness, xenophthalmia and photophobia that are indicative of deficiency of liver and kidney yin, Liuwei Dihuang Wan may be taken simultaneously, or Liuwei Dihuang Tang for oral administration of the boluses. In case of epilepsy with excessive phlegm, Daotan Tang [composed of Erchen Tang plus Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis) and Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus)] can be used for oral administration of the boluses.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by deficiency of the kidney-yin, hyperactive heart-yang and incoordination between the heart and kidney. It should be treated by nourishing yin and suppressing yang, restoring coordination between the heart and kidney and tranquilizing mind. The first ingredient, which is pungent and cold in nature and takes effect in the kidney, is the monarch drug with the effect of supplementing yin, suppressing hyperactive Yang and easing mind.

Used as minister drug, the second ingredient is sweet and cold in nature and takes effect in the heart, purging away fire from the heart and tranquilizing mind. Both in compatibility can supplement yin and suppress the hyperactive yang so that the normal physiological coordination between the heart and kidney is restored and the vital-qi can ascend to nourish head and prevent the head from being disturbed by the upward invasion of the hyperactive heart-fire. Consequently such symptoms as blurring of vision, deafness, palpitation and insomnia will be relieved. Besides these two ingredients can also suppress the hyperactive yang and stop endogenous wind.

Thus, epilepsy, which is brought about by liver-wind stirring due to the hyperactive yang, is relieved with this recipe. The last ingredient functions as adjuvant drug, which regulates the spleen and stomach to promote the transportation and transformation of mineral drugs and to prevent them from impairing the stomach as well. Honey is meant to reinforce the middle-energizer and replenish qi, reduce the efficacy of other drugs and promote the transportation, transformation and distribution of the drugs.

Cautions: The first two ingredients, heavy in nature, should not be used in large dosage or for long time.
