Sijunzi Tang, Decoction of Four Noble Ingredients

Source: Taiping Huimin Hejiju Fang (Benevolent Prescriptions from Taiping Pharmaceutical Bureau).

Ingredients:
No.1  Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 9 g
No.2  Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 9 g
No.3  Fuling (Poria) 9 g
No.4  Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 6 g

Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.

Actions:
Replenishing qi and strengthening the spleen.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is used to treat qi deficiency syndrome of the spleen and stomach marked by pale complexion, low and weak voice, shortness of breath and lassitude, poor appetite, watery stool, pale tongue with whitish fur, thready and weak pulse. It is applicable to chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer and other diseases, which have the above symptoms and pertain to qi deficiency of the spleen and stomach. If concomitant with qi stagnation manifesting chest and epigastric fullness, add Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) to promote the flow of qi, which forms another recipe entitled Yigong San.

If concomitant with phlegm and dampness retaining in the interior and cough with profuse sputum, add Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) to remove phlegm by drying dampness, which constitute another recipe entitled Liujunzi Tang. If concomitant with cold-dampness retaining in the middle-energizer, functional disorder of the stomach-qi and obstructed circulation of qi, add Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Sharen (Fructus Amomi), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) to promote the flow of qi of the middle-energizer and regulate the stomach to relieve vomiting. This forms a new recipe named Xiangsha Liujunzi Tang.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is due to qi deficiency of the spleen and stomach, leading to disorder of transportation and transformation. It should be treated by means of replenishing qi and strengthening the spleen. Ingredient No. 1 possesses the effect of invigorating qi, and acts as monarch drug to strengthen the spleen and nourish the stomach. Used as minister drug, No. 2 is effective in invigorating the spleen and eliminating dampness. Ingredient No. 3 serves as adjuvant drug t9 eliminate dampness and strengthen the spleen.

The last ingredient acts to invigorate qi, reinforce the middle-energizer and mediate the Properties of other drugs as guiding drug. The combination of ingredients No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 brings about the effects of invigorating qi, reinforcing the spleen and stomach, while that of ingredients No. 2 and No. 3 invigorating the spleen and eliminating dampness to promote transportation and transformation. The four ingredients in compatibility constitute the recipe. For reinforcing the spleen and stomach with sweat and warm drugs, which has the characteristics of reinforcement without stagnancy and warming without dryness.
