Character of the tongue: The tongue fur is so thick that the tongue body cannot be seen through the fur, also called body-unseen fur.
Clinical significance: The thick fur is formed by fumigation of the stomach qi mingled with pathogenic dampness and turbidity. It indicates the invasion of excess pathogenic factors into the interior, or internal phlegm-dampness, or retention of food. The tongue fur changing from thin to thick indicates that the pathogenic factors become excess and the illness gets worse. The tongue fur, in which the thick fur gradually disappears and the thin fur reappears, indicates that the healthy qi conquers the pathogenic factors and the illness retreats.
