Most of the "Pressing" manipulations belong to the stimulative manipulations, which don’t rely on their direct force to take therapeutic effects on the pathological conditions of the body, but act on the meridian system, through which the intrinsic self-regulating and self-curing functions of the body are promoted to prevent or cure disease. Therefore, the stimulative manipulations must meet the technical requirements of being enduring, forceful, even, gentle, deep and penetrative.
The so-called "being enduring" refers to the manipulation can be handled sternly in the same way for quite a long period according to its specific requirements to make the stimulative quantum of the manipulation accumulate to its critical point and big enough to activate the regulating function of the meridian system and thus improve the pathological condition. For example, "Pushing Sanguan’’and "Retreating Liufu" in the pediatric Tuina treatment must be manipulated for more than half an hour on some serious infant patients, otherwise it can not take a remarkable effect of resolving the exterior and promoting sweat or relieving fever. The so-called "being forceful’’ means that the manipulation should have appropriate physical strength within a certain range, the quantity of manipulation force is in direct proportion with its stimularing intensity to the meridian system. But if it is beyond the limit, the force may injure tissues or become a suppressive signal of over-limitation to weaken the function on the meridian system. The quantity of manipulation force is not fixed. It must be adjusted according to the concrete conditions such as the acting parts, the pathological features, the patient’s constitutions and so on, which will take a long time to master.
The so-called "being even" means that the motion of manipulation should be with a certain rhythm, uniform velocity and physical strength. The Fig. 2 is a measuring curve of "Dhyana-thumb-pushing", which shows the heights, the widths and the patterns of the waves are almost identical to each other. The so-called "being gentle’’ refers to the patterns of delivering force. The force varing smoothly and slowly, is gentler than that varing violently and quickly. The touch with a soft and flexible tissue such as palm is gentler than those with a hard and inflexible tissue such as bone process.
The so-called "being deep and penetrative" means that application of various skillful manipulations can reduce the tension of body living tissues, and decrease the resistance of the tissues, and therefore, the manipulation force can be transmited into deep tissues.
