Overview
Morning Sickness mostly begins in the 5-6th week of pregnancy, with the symptom of nausea, vomiting, and unable to take food which may be spontaneous cured to the 12th week of pregnancy. Some severity may develop to hyperemesis. Although occurrence of hyperemesis in middle or advanced stage may be seen fewer, pathogenetic condition is often serious, and with bad prognosis. In TCM, it is also named "ezu", "zibing", "erbing", and "zubing". It is mostly caused by weakness of the spleen and stomach. menstrual bleeding not rushed down after pregnancy, magnificent of CHONG meridian-qi upward inversely, insufficiency of gastric qi fail to descend, following with adversely ascending qi of thoroughfare vessel to be overcome by nausea, or splenic asthenia failing to transport, endogeny of phlegmatic hygrosis, to take the chance of deficiency of gastric qi to stagnate in Zhongwan, adversely ascending qi of thoroughfare vessel with phlegmatic hygrosis to cause nausea and vomiting. Or innate insufficiency of gastric qi, yin-blood gathering to support the fetus after pregnancy, deficiency of liver-blood, the liver failing to be nourished, causing prosperous of hepatic qi, or emotion impairing the liver, the liver failing to maintain the normal flow of qi, the liver failing to maintain the normal flow of qi with adversely ascending qi of thoroughfare vessel rising inversely to invade stomach which lead to nausea and vomiting. Therapeutic principle is invigorating the spleen and harmony the stomach, soothing the liver-qi and calming the adverse-rising energy.
Treatment
1. Neiguan (PC 6)
Let the patient be sitting or dorsal position, with routine sterilization, needle perpendicularly at the depth of about 0.8-1 cun with 1.5 cun 28 gauge filiform needle. Adopt intermittency twirling and rotating method with small extent, and the stimulus intensity should not too strong. It should be retained for 20 minutes. Treatment is done once every day, and change to once every other day.
2. Zhongwan (RN 12)
Use acupuncture-therapy. Let the patient be dorsal position, with routine sterilization, needle it perpendicularly at the depth of about 0.8-1 cun with 1.5 cun 28 gauge filiform needle. Adopt intermittency twirling and rotating method with small extent, and the stimulus intensity should not too big. It should be retained for 20 minutes. Treatment is done once every day, and change to once every other day after one week treatment. Acupuncture with warming needle also can be used
Treat with moxibustion. Let the patient lay on the back, moxibustion with moxa stick (distance between cutaneous covering 5 cm) 10 minutes, which will be result in the skin to blush. Treatment is done 2-3 times every day. Treatment changes to once every other day after one week treatment
3. Zusanli (ST 36)
Use acupuncture-therapy. Let the patient sitting or dorsal position, with routine sterilization, needle perpendicularly at the depth of about 1-1.5 cun with 1.5-2 eun 28 gauge filiform needles. Adopt intermittency twirling and rotating method with small extent, and the stimulus intensity should not too big. It should be retained for 20 minutes every day. Treatment is done once every day, and change to once every other day after one week treatment.
Use point-injection therapy: Let the patient be sitting or dorsal position, with routine sterilization; choose 5 or 6 gauge pinhead to needle the point with parenteral solution of vitamin B6 3 ml. After obtaining qi, inject 1-1.5 ml medication slowly. Treatment is done once every day or every other day, and 10 times make up one course of treatment.
4. Gongsun (SP 4)
Let the patient be sitting or dorsal position, with routine sterilization, needle it perpendicularly at the depth of about 0.5-1 cun with 1.5 cun 28 gauge filiform needle. Adopt intermittency twirling and rotating method with small extent, and the stimulus intensity should not too strong. It should be retained for 20 minutes. Treatment is done once every day, and change to once every other day after one week treatment.
Note
1. Acupuncture therapy is an effective way to treat vomiting of pregnancy, and often prove effective after several times of treatments and without side effect to pregnant woman and foetus.
2. When treating with acupuncture, the method should not be too strong.
