These acupoints are needled perpendicularly or obliquely; the depth of insertion is usually 0.3 - 1 cun; the depth for the acupoints on the tip of the fingers or toes is about 0.1 cun.
Hegu (LI 4)--It is needled perpendicularly 0.5 – 1 cun.
Laogong (PC 8)--It is needled perpendicularly 0.3 - 0.5 cun.
Taichong (LR 3)--It is needled 0.5 - 1 cun perpendicularly or obliquely upwards.
The needling sensation of the above three acupoints is strong, so the manipulations should not be too forceful.
Chongyang (ST 42) -- It is needled perpendicularly 0.3 -0.5 cun, avoiding the arteries.
In addition, Hegu (LI 4), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Jianjing (GB 21), Kunlun (BL 60), Zhiyin (BL 67) are effective in promoting blood circulation and menstrual flow when needled. So these acupoints should not be needled in the gravida.
