Overview
Atrophia nervi optic is extensive damage of auxiliary fibers of retinal ganglial cells, showing up atrophia and degeneration, which is mainly characterized by lesion of visual function and pallescence of blind spot. Various kinds of causes can produce atrophia nervi optic, for example, inflammation, degeneration, ischemic, surgical trauma, inheritance and compression of endo-arcula or intracranial space occupying lesion. Choked disc and cataracta glauca also can cause atrophia nervi optic. It is similar to green blind in TCM, mainly being caused by congenital innate deficiency, deficiency of both the liver and kidney, insufficiency of blood and essence, weakness and closeness of eye; or closing of the sweat pore, stagnation of qi and blood, disfunction of the normal ophthalmic function; or damage of ocular connector, stagnation of arteries and veins, disfunction of sending nutrient upward to eye. So the principle is reinforcing liver and kidney, nourishing blood and promoting blood flow.

Treatment
1. Jingming (BL 1)
Advise the patient to close the eyes and push the eye ball to the lateral side with the left hand. The right hand inserts the needle 0.3-0.5 cun slowly into the point, following the orbital border, without lifting and thrusting technique or great extent of rotation. The needling is done once a day, 10 times a period.

2. Fengchi (GB 20)
Insert the needle toward opposite side of the eyeball, with the technique of setting the mountain on fire, making the needling sensation toward eye area. The needling is done once a day, 10 times a period.

Note
1. Up to now, there is no satisfying treatment of atrophia nervi optici. Acupuncture and moxibustion can control the progression of disease and promote recovery, which has curative effect in the near future.

2. Be careful of daily life, refraining of anger, avoiding overwork, which can delay growing blind.
