Conventional Acupuncture Treatment for Cough

(1) Penetrating Puncture

Points: Shanzhong (CV 17) and Hegu (LI 4)

Technique: The patient is in a supine position. A No.30 2-cun long filiform needle is inserted from Shanzhong (CV 17) downward along the presternum and penetrating to Jiewei (CV 14), after which a lifting, thrusting and rotating technique is applied. Then Hegu (LI 4) is stimulated. The needles are retained for 30 minutes. Such a method can treat all types of cough.

 

(2) Gentle Puncture

Points: Jinjin (Ex-HE 12), Yuye (Ex-HE 13), Yuji (LU10), Tiantu (CV 22), Feishu (BL 13) and Zhongwan (Ren 12).

Technique: Gentle puncture is applied on all the points. Except Jinjin (Ex-HE12) and Yuye (Ex-HE13), the needles are retained on the rest points for 20 minutes. Coughing due to lung yin deficiency is indicated.
