Injecting alpha interferon into acupuncture points "showed significantly better effect on the loss of serum HBeAg than intramuscular injection" and "was better than intravenous infusion for loss of serum HBeAg."  HBeAg is an extracellular form of HBcAG, a hepatitis B viral protein that indicates active viral replication. Bloodborne HBeAg is associated with high rates of viral replication and enhanced infectivity. In the study, injection of interferon into acupuncture points was more effective in reducing serum HBeAg than intramuscular injections and intravenous infusions.
