Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 2,280 patients treated with both acupuncture and moxibustion for chronic PID. The researchers discovered that acupuncture and moxibustion patients demonstrated significant positive patient outcomes. The TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) treatment groups scored significantly better than control groups. Additionally, the recurrence rate of PID was significantly lower for patients receiving acupuncture and moxibustion.

PID is the inflammation of the pelvic organs and/or connective tissues including the broad ligament. PID is often caused by infections such as those due to STDs: gonorrhea, chlamydia, mycoplasms and other viral and bacterial intravaginal microorganisms. The main symptoms are lower abdominal pain and vaginal discharge, leukorrhea. In TCM, differential diagnostics classify the onset of PID as the invasion of damp-heat toxins causing qi and blood stasis in the lower jiao. The biomedical equivalent is an intravaginal infection causing scarring of the reproductive organs and surrounding tissues. Infertility and ectopic pregnancies are often caused by the tissue damage from PID. For example, fallopian tube inflammation (salpingitis) due to PID may lead to permanent blockage of the tubes.

Acute PID may present as a medical emergency and may require hospitalization. Chronic PID is often unresponsive to long-term antibiotic use and multiple exploratory surgical procedures. Licensed acupuncturists are equipped to treat many insidious and pernicious cases of PID with both acupuncture and herbal medicine. In many cases, long-standing PID may be resolved in a short period of time. The herb hong teng is depicted in this image.

Over 750,000 women have an episode of PID in the USA annually. Over 100,000 women in the USA become infertile due to PID every year. Over 150 women die from PID and its complications in the USA every year. In some cases, PID may be completely asymptomatic. Chlamydia screenings are important for those who are sexually active and may help to prevent undetected PID from becoming a serious medical problem.

HealthCMi offers several courses on the treatment of PID. The instant-anytime courses include two formats. The first format is the downloadable eBook and the second format is the instant video display. HealthCMi also offers live webinars on the treatment of PID.
