A common disorder of the red blood cells is known as Anemia. The Greek word Anemia means "without blood." Anemia is a condition in which an abnormally low number of red blood cells circulate in the body. Generally speaking, it is the most common disorder of the red blood cells and has many symptoms and signs. Fatigue, weakness, tiredness and uneasiness are very common symptoms of Anemia. A person with anemia will feel tired and weak because the body’s tissues are being starved of oxygen. Actually, fatigue is the main symptom of most types of anemia. The severity of symptoms is partly related to the severity of anemia. Mild anemia occurs without symptoms and can only be detected during a medical examination including a blood test.
Symptoms and Signs of Anemia in TCM include:
1. Deficiency of Both Qi and Blood
Symptoms: Sallow or pale complexion, lassitude, shortness of breath, poor appetite, palpitation, accompanied by insomnia, dizziness, or even fainting, pale or flat finger nails, pale and swollen tongue with thin coating, feeble and thready pulse.
2. Deficiency of Liver Yin and Kidney Yin
Symptoms: Pale complexion, flushed cheeks, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and weakness of the loins and legs, often accompanied by low fever, dysphoria, feverish sensation over the palms and soles, night sweating, dry mouth, dry and fragile finger nails, dry skin with occasional petechia and ecchymosis, nose bleeding, gingival bleeding, menorrhagia, red tongue with thin coating, and thready, rapid and forceless pulse.
3. Deficiency of Spleen Yang and Kidney Yang
Symptoms: Pale complexion, pale lips and finger nails, emaciation or edema, dizziness, listlessness, shortness of breath, disinclination for speaking, soreness and weakness along the spinal column, aversion to cold, cold limbs, spontaneous sweating, poor appetite, loose stools, occasional nose bleeding and gingival bleeding, nocturnal emission and impotence in males, menoxenia in females, pale tongue, deep and thready pulse.
