Menstruation is defined as the monthly discharge of blood from the uterus of a non-pregnant woman. This occurs from the period of puberty up until menopause. The normal menstrual flow is for 3-5 days and the normal cycle pattern ranges from 24-32 days. Irregular menstruation is labelled when a woman suffers from: (1) Bleeding that is not related to her regular cycle. (2) When periods are longer and heavier compared to normal. (3) When there is a missed or absent period. (4) When the gap between two periods is longer or shorter than normal. (5) An irregularity at the start and end of menstrual life is however considered normal.
Symptoms of irregular menstruation begin with little or profuse bleeding. This bleeding occurs apart from the regular menses. The gap between two menstrual periods is either longer or shorter compared to a normal cycle. There is a characteristic pain in the sides, back and just above the pelvic region. Headaches, a change in mood and irritability is also quite common as these irregular menstruations do become very troublesome to a woman.
