Trigeminal Neuralgia, also known as Tic Douloureaux, is a nerve disorder that causes abrupt, searing, electric-shock-like facial pains, most commonly the pain involves the lower face and jaw, but symptoms may appear near the nose, ears, eyes or lips. Many experts say trigeminal neuralgia is the most unbearably painful human condition. Neuralgia is severe pain along the course of a nerve. The pain occurs because of a change in neurological structure or function due to irritation or damage of a nerve. Following are some of the main patterns related to the conditions of trigeminal neuralgia:
1. Pattern of WInd-Cold Blocking the meridians
Main symptoms: paroxysmal hyperspasmia, prosopodynia, pale complexion, aggravation in cold days, light tongue, white coating, floating pulse.
2. Pattern of Wind-heat Invading the Meridians
Main symptoms: pain in the face, burning and sharping pain, redness in the face, sweating, thirst, hot eyes, red tongue, yellow coating, rapid pulse.
3. Pattern of Liver and Stomach Heat
Main symptoms: Pains coming and going, burning and sharping pain, irritability, dull distension in the chest or ribs, dry stool, red tongue, yellow coating, rapid pulse.
4. Pattern of Yang Deficiency
Main symptoms: repeated pains in the face without stopping, aversion to cold, weakness of waist and knees, clear abundant urine, light tongue, white coating, deep pulse.
