TCM Diagnosis for Spring Conjunctivitis

Key points for diagnosis
1.Clinical Manifestations
Usually, the disease attacks binocularly in spring and summer and disappears naturally in autumn and winter, but recurs next spring and lasts years without recovery. Its typical symptom is unbearable ocular itching accompanied by photophobia, dacryorrhea, foreign body sensation and a little eye secretion.
Clinically, the disease is divided into three types according to the part of pathogenic changes.

(1) Type of palpebral conjunctiva   It is the most common type with the lesion often localized in the upper palpebral conjunctiva. At the beginning of its occurrence, there is a small amount of adhensive and thready secretion, congestion of the conjunctiva, lots of flat cobble-like and light red papillae in the upper palpebra conjunctiva which are of various sizes and shapes with a layer of milk-like substance painted on, and the tarsal becomes hyperplastic and pachyntic.

(2) Type of corneal limbus ( bulbar conjunctiva)  The lesion starts in the corneal limbus and near the bulbar conjunctiva. One or many grayish yellow colloid projecting nodules appear at the corneal limbus, and the surrounding part of the bulbar conjunctiva congested, especially the palpebral fissure.

(3) Mixed Type    Both of the above pathogenic changes exsist in the affected eye simultaneously.
2. Laboratory Examination: Acidocyte can be found on the secretion smear of conjunctival sac or by conjunctival scaling.

In TCM, a disease or a symptom might be caused by one pathogenic factor, even two or three pathogenic factors. When diagnosing a disease or a symptom, TCM doctors must follow the principle of "Syndrome Dfferentiation", and then "Suit the Remedy to the Case". In order to gain a more definite and valuable diagnosis, it's important and necessary for the doctor to learn the detailed health information of the patient, including his/her disease duration, age, sex, height, weight, family history, urine, stool, diet, sleep, sweat, energy, mood (emotion), as well as the tongue conditions and the palm conditions, etc. If you would want our expert to create a TCM diagnosis, you're welcome to contact us.
