Syndrome differentiation and treatment
Syndrome of dampness and heat of lung meridian
1. Main symptoms and signs: The patient has persistent nasal obstruction, hyposmia, increased quantity of nasal discharge, often with dizziness and headache. The examiner can see one or several semitransparent neoplasms with the smooth surface and greyish or pale colour which are soft, free from pain and movable when palpated. More and bigger neoplasms may change the external shape of the nose to make the nasal bridge broadened and enlarged. The fur is whitish and greasy and the pulse slippery.
Therapeutic methods: Clearing away heat and dispersing the lung, removing dampness and eliminating masses.
2. Prescription and drugs: The prescription used is the modified Xinyi Qingfei Decoction (Magnolia Decoction for Clearing away Heat from the Lung) composed of 10g of Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 10 g of Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), 30 g of Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (to be decocted first), 10g of Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), 10 g of Sangbaipi ( Cortex Mori Radicis), 6 g of Xinyi (Flos Magnoliae), 10 g of Pipaye (Folium Eriobotrgae), 10 g of Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis) (to be wrapped), 10 g of Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), 10 g of Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), 6g of Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) and 10 g of Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae ) .
Modification: In the case of profuse nasal discharge and sputum, add 10 g of Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae) , 10 g of Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus)and 5 g of sigualuo (Fasciculus Vascularia Luffae).
3. External application
Inhalation of vapour therapy: lOg of Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) and Shiliupi (Pericarpium Granati) respectively is decocted until the water boils. Then, breathe in the medicinal vapour while the decoction is hot for 30 minutes each time, once or twice a day. One dose can be
used for three to four times. The therapy lasts one to two months.
