The disease belongs to the category of "Houguanyong" (peritonsillar abscess) in TCM. The accumulation of heat in the lung and stomach at ordinary times, together with the external attack by pathogenic wind and heat, stirs up the accumulated heat in the stomach. This will cause the internal and external pathogenic factors struggle with each other. At this time, the rising heat scorches the pharyngolarynx to result in stagnation of qi and blood. The accumulated pathogenic heat causes swelling, scorches blood and muscle to bring about putrefaction which will finally develop into abscess. This is the way most peritonsillar abscess is caused.
