Urinary tract infection is divided into three syndromes of dampness and heat in urinary bladder, qi deficiency of the spleen and kidney as well as deficiency of the kidney yin according to the case history, course of the disease and clinical manifestations in syndrome differentiation. Dampness and heat in urinary bladder is commonly seen at the acute stage and marked by frequent and urgent urination, burning pain of urethra, bearing-down distension of lower abdomen, chills, fever, bitter taste and sticky mouth, thirst without the desire for drinking, red tongue with yellowish and greasy fur; qi deficiency of the spleen and kidney has a longer course and manifests unsmooth and painful urination, lassitude, short breath without the desire for speaking, cold body, aversion to cold, etc. ; yin deficiency of the kidney is marked by scanty and frequent urination, low fever, night sweat, dry throat and lips, poor sleep, red tongue with a little fur, thready and rapid pulse.
