Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment
1. Agglomeration of Dampness and Heat
Chief Manifestations: Paroxysmal abdominal pain, bloody stools, or rectal tenesmus, burning sensation in the anus, or fever, fullness in the chest, restlessness, thirst, nausea, poor appetite, frequent bowel movements, heaviness and distention of the abdomen, red tongue, with yellow and greasy coating, smooth and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: To clear away heat and promote diuresis.
2. Stagnation of Toxic Materials and Blood Stasis
Chief Manifestations: Feverish sensation with restlessness, thirst, diarrhea with profuse pus and blood in purple color, rectal tenesmus, pricking pain in the abdomen, purple tongue with dark spots and yellow coating, thready and unsmooth or thready and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: To remove blood stasis and toxic materials.
3. Deficiency of Liver Yin and Stomach Yin
Chief Manifestations: Dull pain in the abdomen, constipation, or vomiting, thirst, bitter taste, preference for cold, aversion to heat, red and dry tongue, thready and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: To nourish yin and clean the intestines.
4. Deficiency of Qi and Blood
Chief Manifestations: Pale complexion, pale lips and nails, shortness of breath and lassitude, dislike of speaking, prolapse of the anus, pale tongue with thin and white coating, weak and thready pulse.
Therapeutic Method: To nourish qi and blood.
5. Deficiency of Spleen Yang and Kidney Yang
Chief Manifestations: Abdominal pain relieved by pressing, cold limbs and loose stools, shortness of breath and lassitude, or dawn diarrhea, pale and swollen tongue with teeth marks, deep and slow pulse or deep, thready and forceless pulse.
Therapeutic Method: To warm and tonify the spleen and kidney.
6. Deficiency of Liver Yin and Kidney Yin
Chief Manifestations: Emaciation, feverish sensation in soles, palms and the chest, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness of the lower back and knees, night sweating, seminal emission, leukorrhea, deep red tongue with less coating, wiry and thready pulse.
Therapeutic Method: To nourish kidney yin.
