Of the dietetic Chinese drugs stated above for treatments of common cold and bronchitis, Flos Chrysanthemi (Juhua), prepared soybean and other herbs, which can dispel pathogenic wind and heat from the body, can be used to treat patients suffering from pneumonia at the initial stage manifested as the syndrome of wind-heat attacking the lung; while water chestnut, lily bulb, pear, lotus root, honey and others, which can remove heat-phlegm and nourish yin to moisten the lung, can be used to treat pneumonia patients indicating the syndrome of excessive accumulation of lung-heat or impairment of both qi and yin.
Garlic (Bulbus AUii)
Its effective constituent garlicin has a potent antibacterial action, that is why both of its juice and garlic syrup can be used to treat pneumonia. Garlic juice containing 5% of it is to be taken 4 times a day; 20ml each time, and garlic syrup containing 10 % of it is to be taken every 4 hours, 15 to 20 ml each time.
Portulaca (Herba Portulacae)
It is the whole grass of Portulaca oleracea L. [Portulacaceae] and an edible wild vegetable which can remove pathogenic heat, cool the blood, remove the poisonous quality of any substance and inhibit many kinds of bacteria. Gruel of 30g of portulaca and 50g of polished round-grained rice can serve as an auxiliary treatment of pneumonia. It is to be taken once or twice a day.
