When you say secondary conditions I'm assuming your asking about how Crohn’s manifests itself. Crohn's is basically inflammation in the digestive track. It's a very simple definition but that's more or less the gist. What that causes however is a host of problems. Inflammation in the intestine leads to trouble digesting food. That can lead to diahrhea. From there we end up dehydrated, undernourished, and losing weight. Due to the lack of digestion, we lose a lot of nutrients. We are low in iron and b12 which makes you very tired. Sometimes I'm so exhausted, I can't get off the couch. I can sleep for 12 hours and wake up feeling more tired than when I went to sleep.
You can end up with strictures in the intestine, basically a narrowing of the intestine that can lead to a partial or full blockage. Super painful. Many Crohn's patients suffer from fistulas- basically a canal that starts in the intestine and eventually finds its way out, usually in the perianal area. It is usually accompanied by an abscess and they can be very difficult to heal. The new biologic drugs (Remicaide, Humira, Stelara) have been pretty successful in treating many people but not everyone. I hope this helps.
Instructions:
Marshmallow: Due to the mucilage content in marshmallow, it has a soothing effect on the gastrointestinal tract and is very effective in the treatment of Crohn’s disease.
According to the University of Michigan Health System, marshmallow heals the inflamed lesions in the gastrointestinal tract, removes irritants and reduces inflammation.
1. Add two to five grams of dried leaf of marshmallow, or five grams of dried marshmallow root, to one cup of hot water.
2. Cover and steep for five to 10 minutes.
3. Strain and then drink this tea.
4. Drink marshmallow tea three times per day.
Note: Avoid marshmallow if you have diabetes.
