The source is from the resin of ancient pines buried in the earth for a long time. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the areas of Yunnan, Guangxi, Liaoning, and Henan, etc.. It is ground into powder for being used after it is collected and got rid of impurity.
Medicinal Properties: Sweet in flavor, mild in nature and attributive to the heart, liver and bladder meridians.
Actions: Tranquilize the mind, promote blood circulatin to remove blood stasis, promote diuresis and relieve stranguria.
Application
1. It is used for restlessness, convulsion and epilepsy; for palpitation and restlessness, insomnia and frequent dreams, it is combined with Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae ) , Yejiaoteng ( Caulis Polygoni Multiflori ), and Zhusha (Cinnabaris), etc., such as Hupo Dingzhi Wan (Pill) ; for convulsion and epilepsy, usually combined with Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Quanxie (Scorpio), etc..
2. It is used for amenorrhea, abdominal mass and pains. For amenorrhea due to blood stasis and qi stagnation, and swelling and pains due to trauma, it should be combined with Danggui ( Radix Angelicae Sinensis ), Ezhu (Rhizoma Zedoariae ), and Wuyao (Radix Linderae), etc. ; it is powdered singly and used for scrotum and labial hematoma of woman's vulva or blood stasis in uterine; it is combined with Sanqi (Radix Notoginseng), which is ground into powder for oral use to treat coronary heart disease.
3. For stranguria or retention of urine, especially for bloody stranguria that can be treated effectively with its single form. It is taken with the decoction of Congbai (Bulbus Cepae ) to treat stranguria of sand and stone types; it is also used together with Jinqiancao (Herba Lysimachiae ), Bianxu ( Herba Polygoni Avicularis ) and others that can promote diuresis and relieve stranguria to treat stranguria of heat and stone type.
Usage and Dosage:
1.5- 3 g of the powder is taken with water. It is not used in decoction.
