Reflexology treatment for retention of urine

In traditional Chinese medicine the retention of urine is called Longbi. Dysuria with urine discarged by drops is called Long and the complete obstruction of urination is called Bi.
   
Differential diagnosis: Patients with damp-heat pathogens in urinary bladder may suffer from retention of urine or frequent discharge of small amount of dark and hot urine, distension of lower abdomen, bitter taste and stickiness in mouth, red tongue with yellow, thick and greasy coating, and rapid pulse. Patients with accumulation of heat pathogens in lungs may suffer from retention of urine or dysuria with small amount of urine, dryness in throat, thirst with desire to drink water, yellow and thin tongue coating, and rapid pulse. Patients with liver qi stagnation may suffer from annoyance, anger, retention of urine or dysuria, distension of flank and costal region, red tongue with thin and yellow coating, and wiry pulse. And patients with kidney qi deficiency may suffer from retention of urine or discharge of urine by drops, feeble urination, pale complexion, coldness in lower body below waist, pale tongue, and deep and thready pulse.
   
Treatment:
Foot massage: The massage is applied to lung (14), spleen (34), kidney (22), liver (18), urinary bladder (24), ureter (23), urethra (51) and prostate gland (50) reflecting areas (Fig. 68).
  
Foot acupuncture:
1) Meridianal acupoints: At Dazhong (KI 4), Shuiquan (KI 5), Taichong (LR 3), Yongquan (KI 1) and Zhiyin (BL 67) acupoints, a moderate reducing technique with moxibustion after acupuncture is applied and the needles are retained for 30 minutes for patients with retention of urine, except those with kidney qi deficiency to whom a reinforcing technique is applied.

2) Foot acupoints: At Uterus (FA-P 16), Urinary bladder (FA-P 15), Kidney (FA-P 14) and Spleen (FA-P 10) acupoints, a moderate twisting stimulation is applied and the needles are retained for 30 minutes. The Lung (FA-P 6) acupoint is added for patients with accumulation of heat pathogens in lung, and the Liver (FA-P 9) acupoint is added for patients with liver qi stagnation.
   
External application of drugs:
1) Dysuria: The powder of alum 31 gm is mixed with vinegar to prepare a paste for application over the central area of both soles, once a day.

2) Retention of urine with distension of lower abdomen: One bulb of Shuixian (Chinese sacred lily) and 30 grains of Bimazi (castor bean) with skin peeled are pounded to prepare a paste for application over the central area of both soles and changed 2-3 times each night.

3) Retention of urine: Five bulbs of garlic and 50 grains of Damazi (hemp seed) are pounded to prepare a paste for application over the central area of both soles at night, removed in the next morning, for several nights until the urine retention is relieved.
   
Foot bath:
For retention of urine due to damp-heat pathogen in urinary bladder, yellow wine 1000 ml is put in a basin to soak both feet for 40 to 60 minutes.
