Pain and limited neck movement may be relieved through self-healing within 4-5 days in mild cases. But it may radiate to the shoulder, back and occipital region and last for several weeks in severe cases.
Differential diagnosis: Patients attacked by wind and cold pathogens mac suffer from chills and pain in neck, relievable by heat, pale tongue with white coating, and floating pulse. Patients whose condition is caused by external trauma may suffer from local pain, pale tongue, and wiry pulse.
Treatment:
Foot massage: The massage is applied to neck (7), cervical spine (53), trapezius muscle (11) and kidney (22) reflecting areas (Fig. 73).
Foot acupuncture:
1) Meridianal acupoints: At Jinggu (BL64), Shugu (BL65), Kunlun (BL60), Qiuxu (GB40) and Lidui (ST 45) acupoints, a strong reducing technique is applied and the needles are retained for 20 minutes. Moxibustion after acupuncture is applied to patients attacked by wind and cold pathogens.
2) Foot acupoint: Moderate lifting, thrusting and twisting stimulation of the reducing technique is applied at Stiff neck (FA-D 6) acupoint and the needle is retained for 20 minutes. Moxibustion after acupuncture is applied to patients whose condition is caused by wind and cold pathogens.
