Excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes. Diabetic patients often drink incessantly because they are dehydrated from the cell-dehydrating effects of hyperglycemia, plus the effects of their bodies casting off the excess glucose through excessive urination, taking hydration with it. Diabetes mellitus is not the only condition or disease for which excess drinking is a symptom. The "other" diabetes, diabetes insipidus, gets its nickname, "the thirsty disease", from the excessive drinking of its sufferers. Urinary tract infections can cause polydipsia and polyuria.
Polydipsia is a sign or symptom indicating, due to lack of sufficient insulin, the body is unable to properly metabolize carbohydrates. With the addition of proper treatment, the symptom resolves, as the system now has enough insulin to accomplish this process properly. In TCM, polydipsia is attributed to three causes: fluid consumption due to lung heat, excessive fire in the stomach, and deficiency of kidney Yin.
1. Fluid Consumption due to Lung Heat
Chief Manifestations: Polydipsia, thirst right after drinking, dry tongue and mouth, polyuria, insufficient saliva, red tongue with yellow thin coating, bounding and rapid pulse.
2. Excessive Fire in the Stomach
Chief Manifestations: Polyphagia with susceptibility to hunger, emaciation, dry mouth, thirst, constipation, red tongue with dry yellow coating, and smooth, solid and forceful pulse.
3. Deficiency of Kidney Yin
Chief Manifestations: Polyuria, cloudy urine, dry mouth and lips, emaciation, sore and weak knees and loins, red tongue with little coating, deep, thready and rapid pulse.
