Huang Kuan (styled Zuoqin,1829-1878,commonly called Wong Fan)was a native of Dongan Village, Xiangshan(now Zhongshan), Guangdong Province.He was the first Chinese to study Western medicine abroad and return to China. He went to the U.S.in 1847,and studied medicine in the University of Edinburgh,Scotland, in 1 850.He then worked in the Canton Missionary Hospital and Kamlifau Hospital in Canton.In 1867,he served as Acting President of the latter.He was an expert surgeon.
